The Montessori Method of Education is an active-learning pedagogy, characterized by the following distinctive elements.

 

- Pedocentrism: the child is the focus of the educational relationship and is considered in his spontaneity, freedom, autonomy and creative expressiveness.

 

- Free choice learning: the child personally chooses the activities to carry out and with which materials to interact. All of this takes place in a protected environment that is tailor-made to him and strengthens his independence, autonomy and resilience.

 

- Teacher is a guide in the child’s learning-by-doing and doesn’t explain the knowledge passively.

 

- Tailored education in line with children's needs and interests: this makes possible the respect of each child's learning times, spaces, needs and individuality.

 

- Learning-by-doing thanks to teaching materials, art, laboratories; until adolescence the child learns by playing. Separate the game from learning is completely unnatural and is not a child's necessity, but adults often do this because they see children like an "empty box" to be filled with passive notions.

 

- Discipline without praise or punishments: every teaching activity allow the self-correcting, one learns from errors. Everyone has his own time and is happy to do what he does for himself and not to please the adult or compete with others. This peculiarities lay the foundations for making an adult satisfied by his job; he will works with passion, whatever job he will do. And this also applies to relationships, social life and many others life's aspects. Thinking bigger, the benefits deriving from this kind of education can be the key to the balanced happiness of an entire community.

 

- The teaching materials were designed by Maria Montessori and her disciples, they are scientific materials, selected after a long and scrupulous observation and experimentation, which the teacher introduces at the exact moment the child needs a given material.
